Are e-signatures legally binding?
In almost every business situation: yes. Electronic signatures have the same legal standing as ink-on-paper across the United States. Here’s the plain-English version, and where the fine print matters.
The short answer
A document signed with Signensure is legally binding wherever electronic signatures are recognized, which is virtually everywhere you do business. The laws that matter:
ESIGN Act (federal)
The federal Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act gives electronic signatures the same legal force as handwritten ones across all US states.
UETA (state)
The Uniform Electronic Transactions Act, adopted by 49 states, makes electronic records and signatures legally effective and admissible in court.
International
Most other jurisdictions have equivalent laws (the EU’s eIDAS, the UK’s ECA, and others), so documents signed with Signensure hold up across borders too.
The common thread
Every framework asks the same things: intent to sign, consent to do business electronically, attribution to a person, and a reliable record of who signed what, when.
What makes a signature stand up
Courts don’t just want a squiggle, they want evidence the signature is genuine and the document hasn’t changed. Signensure builds that evidence into every signing:
- Intent & consent, the signer actively agrees to sign electronically before they start.
- Attribution, a verified email link, optionally strengthened with an access code, SMS passcode, or government-ID verification, ties the signature to a person.
